God as Father: Our Model as Dads

God is my role model as a father. How He fathers is how I am to be as a father. But what would that look like? I recently read a portion of Jerry Bridges’ The Gospel for Real Life that I found to be very helpful.

God provides for us. Philippians 4:19  But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus. What a sobering reminder that I am to provide not just physically, but am to provide spiritually for my family too.

God protects us. Matthew 10:29-31  Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father.  But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows. I am commissioned by the Lord to be the protector, physically and spiritually to my family, which means that I must start with protecting my own heart.

God encourages us. Psalms 10:17  LORD, thou hast heard the desire of the humble: thou wilt prepare their heart, thou wilt cause thine ear to hear. Think of how many times you and I read our Bible and we are encouraged by a verse or passage, even with our weaknesses God encourages us. We need to be encouraging in our relationship with our children.

God comforts us. 2 Corinthians 1:3-4  Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God. It is not always natural for we men to be gentle. Pray regularly that God would exchange your harshness for gentleness.

God disciplines us. Hebrews 12:10  For they verily for a few days chastened us after their own pleasure; but he for our profit, that we might be partakers of his holiness. A genuine, loving dad does practice discipline with his children.
