Remaining Joyful During Difficult Times

Do you find your circumstances dictate how you feel? Do you find that happiness exists only when “good things” happen in your life?

  • an unexpected pay raise
  • a refund check
  • the kids get an “A” on the test
  • your spouse surprises you with a gift

While all these could be sources of joy, what about when your hours get cut back at work, an extra bill from the hospital visit? What robs you of joy reveals your source of joy. Here are four essential truths to recalibrate your mind on what gives you joy even during difficult times…

  1. Position in Christ: I am accepted by God because of Christ.
Life is not made of bills, money and flat tires. True life is found in my relationship to the God of heaven through the person of Jesus Christ. Romans 8:1 tells us, “There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus….” To understand that I am accepted by God because of Christ’s work should allow all of us to remain joyful during the most difficult of times.
  2. Posture by the Father: God’s attitude toward me is unchanging. Jeremiah 31:3  The LORD hath appeared of old unto me, saying, Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love….” Peter’s life is a living testimony of this truth, Paul too. Yet, when we truly understand our own lives in the context of what God is calling us to do, we too realize that no matter how inept we are that God’s unchanging love is the same.
  3. Providence of God: God is sovereign over all the details of my life. God is not the “Great Allower” of not-so-good things to come into my life. God places difficult circumstances in my life on purpose (e.g. Job’s life). Psalms 115:3  But our God is in the heavens: he hath done whatsoever he hath pleased.
  4. Plan of God: These difficult circumstances are part of God’s loving plan for my life. God is bringing all things about for our own good and His own glory (Romans 8).

What idols does God reveal in your life when our joy is taken away? What unchanging truths of God’s Word do you find restore that joy in your life?
