God as Our Father

Here are five fatherly responsibilities that God assumes toward His children.

  1. God provides for us. “But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:19
  2. God protects us. “Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows.” Matthew 10:29-31
  3. God encourages us. “Lord, thou hast heard the desire of the humble: thou wilt prepare their heart, thou wilt cause thine ear to hear.” Psalm 10:17
  4. God comforts us. “Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort;4 Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.” 2 Corinthians 1:3-4
  5. God disciplines us. “For they verily for a few days chastened us after their own pleasure; but he for our profit, that we might be partakers of his holiness.” Hebrews 12:10
With Father’s Day coming on Sunday, this list is a sobering reminder, not only, of what God is to me, but of what I am to be to my children.
This list is taken from Jerry Bridges’ book The Gospel for Real Life (pp. 131-132).
