Big Church for (Parents with) Little Kids

I need help. How do I shepherd and nurture my children’s hearts to actively participating in big church? Honestly, my wife takes a more active oversight role in this than I do, but I read this blog post recently and found it to be a huge help. Author of the post gives general guidelines with some very specific applications that are extremely practical. She wrties:

  • set the expectation
  • set them up to win
  • debrief and reinforce
  • persevere
Make sure to check out the post it will be a help to you and your family.

Is Your Child in the 12%?

This article had some great thoughts about parenting.  Here is just one of them for you to consider:

According to Search’s nationwide study,12% of youth have a regular dialog with their mom on faith/life issues.   In other words, one out of eight kids talks with their mom about their faith.

Deut. 6:6-7    And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart:And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.

Get started with three questions at the dinner table (if you don’t sit at the dinner table together start there):

  • Low of the day – What was the worst moment of your day?
  • High of the day – What was the best part of your day?
  • How did you see God work today?
Oh, and Mom and Dad you answer first.  TALK of Him!

Church-Planting, Anyone?

This is sobering. Our friend, Will Galkin, recently posted the above graphic. A few observations:

  • church attendance ≠ born-again individuals
  • morality is not a sign of Gospel faithfulness (i.e. just because the South votes conservatively does not mean that God is glorified)
  • we need church-planters (and mother churches) to boldly enter unclaimed cities for the Gospel
  • resources need to be allocated for church-planting
  • churches need to reassess whether programs in place are meant to “entertain” the churched or seed the community with the Gospel

Statistics like these demonstrate that Gospel-preaching churches need to seriously reexamine our mission. The American church has a unique opportunity to answer our Lord’s call to the Great Commission or sit idly by hoping that some type of change happens.

All Afghanistan “Churches”…Destroyed

According to this article, the last Afghanistan church building was recently destroyed. The State Department reported:

There are no churches left in Afghanistan, where war, Taliban influence and weak government protections have wiped out nearly all non-Muslim religious communities….

Two reports, that I’ve seen, state that there are fewer than 1% Christians in all Afghanistan (joshuaproject.net).  Three simple suggestions as we consider this needy country.

  1. Pray that our Afghani brothers and sisters will stay faithful in the face of persecution.
  2. Pray to the Lord of the Harvest that He will send forth laborers into His harvest field.
  3. Pray that God would specifically use Bethel Baptist to be part of those whom God would raise to send the Gospel into Afghanistan.
