Philippines Team Update from Manilla

Here’s a brief update from Kevin McDavid & the Philippines Team

We arrived safely into Manila yesterday.  The team is tired but very excited about the ministry that is before us. It is truly amazing to see that we came this far in such a short period of team.

The 10/40 window has been continually pressed into my mind.  On the plane I would often take out the map and look at the vast array of countries and islands.  It is truly humbling to serve a God that would deliver the life changing message of the gospel through teaching and preaching.

We are on our way to Davao today.  This will be the first week of ministry on this island. Pray that God would use us in a mighty way.

I will attempt to keep you updated if Internet is available.

Chris & Rachel DeMorrell

On Monday, June 20th, Lord willing, Rachel and I will have a moving truck packed up and will be on the road headed for Utah to work with Baptist Mid-Missions missionary Mike Bardon. Mike and his wife, Neva, are veteran missionaries who began church planting in the state in 1972. They are currently working on their third church plant in Santaquin, Utah, which is about 60 miles south of Salt Lake City. Santaquin is a bedroom community for Provo and Salt Lake of about 9,000 people and is approximately 95% Mormon. Santaquin Baptist Church currently has a core group of around 15-20 people consisting of members and faithful attendees. Rachel and I will be working closely with them as tentmakers to help further the work. Mike has asked us to head up a children’s ministry, and in addition to this, I’ll be helping Mike with the preaching and teaching ministries. We’ll also be doing Continue reading

A Thought on Church Planting

Pastor has regularly encouraged to pray about Bethel having an active role in planting churches in Allentown and Bethlehem. Consider this church planting thought from Charles H. Spurgeon, Baptist preacher of the mid-1800’s:

“It is with cheerfulness that we dismiss our twelves, our twenties, our fifties to form other churches. We encourage our members to leave us to found other churches; nay, we seek to persuade them to do it. We ask them to scatter throughout the land, to become the goodly seed which God shall bless. I believe that so long as we do this, we shall prosper. I have marked other churches that have adopted the other way, and they have not succeeded.”

Japan Update by Phil & Debbie Melton

Japan has a long history of dealing with both earthquakes and tsunami…

[津波–from “tsu” meaning “port” or “harbor” and “nami” meaning “wave.]

…but none quite so large or as devastating as the 9.0 earthquake and tsunami that followed on March 11.  In general it was less of a wave and more of a spilling over of the ocean onto land in a massive influx of seawater that knocked out farms, ripped houses from their foundations, and tossed around cars like toys.

Whole towns were wiped out.  3.8 million households lost power.  Continue reading

Prayer & Fasting: Afghan Believer Jailed for Following Christ

Last night Pastor challenged us to pray and fast one day a month for the evangelism of the world. I came across a story on Friday of last week that has seen some attention on Christian sites on the internet, but has not received attention in the main stream media.

On May 31, 2010, 25 Afghanistan believers were arrested after a video was aired showing them at a worship service. One Afghan believer, Said Musa, has received the most attention because a letter he wrote to President Obama was smuggled out of Afghanistan. According to various sources Musa converted to Christianity eight years ago. He is the father of six children the oldest being eight years old. Said lost his leg on a landmine as fighting for the Afghan army.
